Period Pants and the Menopause. A hustl. guide.

Period Pants and the Menopause. A hustl. guide.

For many people, when they think about the menopause, it means that they’re finished with periods and having to deal with their cycle. And once periods are finished, so is the need for period underwear, panty liners, pads or anything else absorbent.

I mean, that sounds kinda cool. But it’s also not how real bodies work…

If you move your body regularly - whether it’s running, lifting weights, morning yoga, walking the dog, coaching a kids team, or just being on your feet all day - menopause doesn’t necessarily bring worry-free dryness and certainty. For many women, it brings a different kind of unpredictability.

Your body might not behave how it used to

One of the strange things about menopause is that you can feel incredibly capable and slightly out of control at the same time.

You get hotter, faster.
You sweat more - or maybe a bit differently from before.
Your bladder all of a suddenly lets you down when you’re skipping, sprinting, or maybe just coughing.
You finish a session and think, ‘Is that just sweat? Or is it something else?’

This is totally normal - it doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Your body has changed, your anatomy is changing, and things are responding differently to how they used to.

We get confidence from consistency and predictability. A lack of certainty can really mess with your confidence, and lower confidence often manifests in lower levels of performance.

Uncertainty means you’ve got more to deal with

This is the bit people rarely talk about. It’s not always the amount of leaking or discharge that’s the problem, it’s the mental load of not knowing what’s happening in your underwear while you’re trying to move.

You start choosing black leggings even when it’s boiling hot outside. Or maybe you tie a jumper around your waist “just in case”. You think about cutting a run short, because something ‘doesn’t quite feel right’. Maybe you hold back in a jump, a sprint, or a laugh, because you’re worried about the consequences.

A lot of post-menopausal women experience bladder leaks during exercise. Others notice discharge, especially if they’re using vaginal oestrogen or moisturisers. And then of course, there’s sweat - which can feel almost identical to leaking when it’s warm, rushed, or intense.

All of it is normal. None of it is talked about enough.

Do I need absorbent underwear after I've been through the menopause?

Look, it seems like it wouldn't be relevant, but the honest answer is that many women still want it. Not for periods, of course, but instead for reassurance that they're not going to get caught short. Using absorbent underwear during or after the menopause is about managing light bladder leaks, discharge, sweat, or just not having to think about what’s going on down there while you’re going about your life.

Many women use absorbent underwear daily, because that's what makes them feel confident and reassured. For others, it’s what they wear for long walks, long runs, gym sessions, or days when they’re teaching or travelling. It’s not a medical solution - it’s a comfort one - and who doesn't get comfort from feeling comfortable?

Absorbent underwear can be your support network.

Strength, discipline, mindset. These are the 'big' words we use when we're talking about sports and physical performance. Less often do we talk about the smaller things that make movement and daily life a little easier.

The right underwear doesn’t make you faster or stronger physically, but it removes a barrier to performance by adding one. It takes away one small worry. It lets you move without constantly check yourself in a way that pulls you out of the moment. And that peace of mind breeds more confidence

Post-menopausal bodies don’t need less of that kind of support. They need more of it!

At hustl. we don't think menopause is necessarily an end, we view it more as a 'renegotiation'.

Staying active through this stage of life means being honest about what helps and what gets in the way, even when it’s awkward, even when it involves leaks.

You don't stop sports and physical activity just because your period has finished.
Your body hasn't suddenly become all tidy and predictable.
And needing a bit of backup doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong - it's part of being a regular human female.

So, grab your hustl. pants, get your confidence, and go get it.
